Water Kefir and Endurance Sports: A Winning Combination

Water kefirs, thanks to their benefits, can become truly excellent drinks for endurance athletes and to supplement a complete diet.
In this regard, we went directly "on the race course" and interviewed Dr. Annalisa Faè , a nutritionist by profession and a triathlete by passion and author of the blog donne-sport-lifestyle .
In the interview below, Annalisa tells us about her experience with fermented foods and the benefits she gained from them during her preparation for this year's Ironman in Klagenfurt.

HELLO ANNALISA!

Hello everyone, I'm Annalisa, a pharmacist and nutritionist by profession, I work as a consultant in the world of food and food supplements, in addition, I follow athletes from a nutritional point of view and create specific nutritional plans and integration strategies aimed at maintaining and improving sports performance.

In addition to my profession, I love doing triathlon, a sport that involves the performance of 3 disciplines (swimming, cycling and running in this order) and without a break between them. A decidedly demanding sport and a great stimulus to test new nutritional and integration strategies firsthand.

HOW DID YOU DISCOVER FERMENTED PRODUCTS?

In addition to the studies that led me to my current profession, I have always been fascinated by the brain-gut axis that is so much talked about nowadays, and specifically by the intestinal microbiome as the center of the organism's well-being. In particular, I studied the fermentation and preparation methods of kefir and kombucha until I tried to make them at home too, then through Davide and Eleonora, sporty friends, I discovered the VIVI ferments products.


HOW LONG HAVE YOU KNOWN THEM?

For a couple of years, I first made kefir at home, with water grains, then I preferred to buy it ready-made because it was easier and better than mine 😝


WATER KEFIR: FIRST IMPRESSION?

The feeling of “relaxation” that it gives me in my stomach, both on days when I’m busy with training, since between gels and bars and physical effort I sometimes feel a bit dizzy and heavy, and on days when I want a thirst-quenching drink.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST BENEFIT YOU’VE FOUND WITH FERMENTED DRINKS?

Training and supplementation lead to stress on the digestive system and changes in the composition of the microbiome, so for an athlete like me, taking probiotics has always been important.
I also consider it essential for the well-being of the body "stressed" not only by daily training but also by the somewhat frenetic lifestyle that we are all led to lead.
Adding a fermented drink or a fermented vegetable to my regular diet helps me keep my microbiome healthy, thus avoiding typical problems such as bloating and abdominal tension. I also use them as a “digestive” after work dinners, when I get home!

AND FINALLY ANNALISA, WHO WOULD YOU MOST RECOMMEND USING WATER KEFIR TO?

I recommend them first of all to women, normally the most affected by irritable bowel syndrome and the most "emotional" in terms of the belly, then in general to all athletes who dedicate themselves to intense training, especially triathlon and running, which lead to alterations of the resident flora and which consequently must be kept in good health to also always maintain good levels of performance.
